A pedestrian died after being struck by a wrong-way driver on 52 Street N.E. at 5:14 a.m. MT Monday.

Calgary police said a Ford F-150 pickup truck was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes when it struck a woman in her 50s crossing the street. The truck then crashed head-on into a Jeep Cherokee. One vehicle caught fire following the collision.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Three people were taken to hospital in critical condition: the 25-year-old pickup driver, a woman in her 30s driving the Jeep, and her 35-year-old male passenger.

The pickup driver was taken into custody at the scene. Charges are pending.

Police are investigating speed as a possible factor in the crash.

Both directions of 52 Street N.E. between 32 Avenue and Temple Drive remained closed for several hours. The road reopened at 2:30 p.m. MT.
